Children should start learning music early; some people even say that it should be since birth, since it’s well-known that the most important period in learning is up to 18 months. The sooner they have contact with music and start learning it, the stronger its foundations will be and, consequently, the easier it will be to develop knowledge. Parents should, most of all, sing to children, as well as make them listen to different musical genres. After this first contact, we suggest Ear training classes from ages 3-4, where we start giving, in groups, rhythm and melody through games, dances, songs and instruments such as claves, guiros, tambourines, xylophones, etc. Ear training classes are divided in groups (4-5 years old, 6-7 years old and 8-9 years old) but the development of writing in music starts only at the age where children start learning how to write in school. Ideally, children should start their contact with music as soon as possible, since this enables a faster development and more solid results when they start learning an instrument. We advise the introduction of an instrument at around 6 years old, for it’s at this stage that children’s psycho-motor abilities are mature enough to start this type of work. Generally this coincides with the year they start Primary school.
